This is Manila Sound...This is Kala
The success of their first single and Number 1 hit, JEEPNEY has introduced the resurgence of a sound that is distinctively Pinoy… Manila Sound.
They followed it up with the current chart topping single, “Manila High”. Their second single carries the title of their debut album released under SONYBMG Music Entertainment. Manila High’s current success proves to show that Pinoy’s (not just people from Manila) have been yearning for a fresh new positive sound that they can relate to. As Mike Grape quotes ” Ang mga kanta namin ay kwento ng buhay natin lahat dito sa Pinas.” “Gusto rin naming ipamahagi sa lahat, ang pagiging maligaya ay nasa ating kamay”
KALA has brought their brand of Manila Sound into the DIGITAL Generation. Aside from their distinct fusion sound, their songs depict positive social messages of Pinoy life. Its probably this good vibes that garnered them with a huge fan base of listeners from diverse walks of life. Their success has just brought them to win Favorite New Artist in 2007’s MYX Music Awards.
Their advocacy traces back to the success of the special EP they released last year entitled RockEdition: For the Benefit of the Filipino Youth. This EP project was produced to promote the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals and support the Global Call to Action Against Poverty. This independently produced project was exclusively launched in NU107.5 with the midnight countdown single “Piso-Pisong Paraiso”. “We think that music is the lingua pura or the purest language that we can use to reach out to individuals and unite them into make a difference in themselves. We must be the change we wish to see in our lives, our country and the world” these were passionate words from KALA’s guitarist JP Tanchanco. It is because of this orientation that they tend to urge people, or bands, not to go to rallies, or instigate chaos and partition, but rather, encourage them to unite, look at the positive side of things and promote peace. And just like other artists who are ambassadors of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (Bono, U2, Santana etc…), they recruit followers to wear a white band and join them in saying “No More Excuses”.
Aside from their advocacy, KALA move has paved the way to challenge the type of “BAND sound” common these days. If you’ve listened to their album, you would notice unique production and arrangements that cater to a wide market of listeners. Their mix of rock, acid jazz, funk, groove and OPM has created a unique sound that has brought about a big mark in the current OPM scene. A BIG Mark in redefining the defunct genre called “Manila Sound” that they headlined the Manila Sound Tribute album with their chart-topping rendition of VST’s “Rock Baby Rock”. This special project with Viva Records features the Top local Bands doing covers of Manila Sound songs of the past.
“Its an honor for us to be recognized for our music… We are very thankful for the warm support of our listeners. Its great to be in this golden age of OPM with so many awesome talents.” “KALA’s music is about the friendship we enjoy with each other. So we just want to reach out our good vibes to the rest of the country”, says Brian Tanchanco, Keys and Synth player for the group.
